The City of Pottsboro was founded in 1878 by J. A. Potts as a railroad town and over the next several years the town continued to grow in much the same way as most small Texas towns. However, in 1941 a military base, Perrin Field, was constructed south of town and in 1944, the Red River was dammed forming Lake Texoma. These two events were instrumental in shaping Pottsboro and its surrounding area into what it is today.
While the City of Pottsboro has a population of slightly more than 2,100, it serves as a hub to another 10,000+ people living in communities around the shores of Lake Texoma. The potential for the city to thrive continues with the completion of two major transportation corridor projects - the extension of North SH 289 and the widening of FM 1417. A widening project on Spur 316 and North SH 289 and the construction of a Roundabout is also scheduled in the future and will complete the planned improvements to all of the city’s major transportation corridors. Nearby North Texas Regional Airport at Perrin Field also continues to development and attract new businesses. City leaders have prepared for anticipated future commercial and residential growth by undertaking several water and wastewater infrastructure upgrade projects. Aging water transmission lines throughout the city have been replaced and the recently completed construction of a 12" water transmission now provides additional water capacity on the north side of Pottsboro. The City has also purchased 5,000 acre-feet of water storage capacity in Lake Texoma to insure that future water needs are met. Significant upgrades to the wastewater treatment facility have also been made. The City has an active Keep Pottsboro
Beautiful Commission and a part-time Code Compliance Officer that both assist in the beautification and overall appearance of the city. The City has also established overlay districts along the major highway corridors to help control future growth in these areas. This past year also brought the expansion of the city's curb side recycling program and a switch to an automated water meter reading system.
Numerous improvements and upgrades have been made to The Ball Park (formally Festival Park) and Friendship Park. To enhance the quality of life for area citizens, the City is in the process of constructing a new 28 acre multi-use outdoor recreational facility which will be called the James G. Thompson Municipal Park.
The City of Pottsboro will continue to be proactive to help manage all the anticipated changes but will make every effort to retain the small town atmosphere we all enjoy. The City of Pottsboro is where we say ... Come Play ... Come Stay.
Would recommend removing the 2008 section (12" waterline project) and add the following: 2011 - Construction started on the new James G. Thompson Municipal Park, a 28 acre multi-use outdoor recreational facility.
The City of Pottsboro has purchased five acres of land and received by donation an additional twenty-three acres of land to develop a multi-use outdoor recreational facility. The facility, which is located west of FM 996 just south of the railroad tracks, is being constructed with grant funds received from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Plans include the construction of three soccer fields, two ball fields, a fishing pond, walking trail, basketball court, playground area, gazebo, picnic shelter and other recreational components. Construction is expected to be complete in mid-July 2012.
David Bryant, who donated land to the City of Pottsboro for the park project, is a Denison native and resident. He is a director of Landmark Bank in Pottsboro. Bryant said:
This land is part of the farm that my father, Bud Bryant, grew up on. It has been in my family since James G. Thompson, a pioneer who was the first County Judge of Grayson County, bought it more than 150 years ago. His daughter was the wife of James Potts, for whom Pottsboro is named. So I will be very excited, for many years to come, to see Pottsboro kids enjoying a beautiful park that bears James G. Thompson’s name.
